Quercetin: New Hype for Covid?
Quercetin: New Hype for Covid?
Are you confused about what’s real and what isn’t?Let’s talk about what the actual studies are saying. Is it effective or not?
Facts about Quercetin.
What exactly is it?
Quercetin is a natural flavanoid that is found in fruits and vegetables. Flavanoids are compounds found in plants that reduce infection risk, boost digestion, & increase brain health. They also protect against heart disease, type 2 diabetes, cancer, diabetic neuropathy, kidney, and liver disease! And the list goes on…
But now...there have been many studies around the world that have studied the effects of quercetin on Covid-19.
After the 2003 SARS-CoV-1 coronavirus outbreak, researchers in China found quercetin bound to the spike protein of the virus, interfering with its ability to infect host cells. (3)
Another benefit of quercetin is its amazing ability to reduce inflammation. I think by now, most of us know that inflammation is our enemy. For Covid, inflammation is a major problem, especially in the lungs…. but in studies, Quercetin has shown to reduce that inflammation.
LET’S LOOK AT SOME CONCLUSIONS FROM SEVERAL OF THOSE STUDIES, USING QUERCETIN ON COVID PATIENTS.…
Conclusion Summaries:
1. Quercetin shortened the time from testing positive to negative, as well as the severity of the symptoms. (2)
2. Quercetin was said to have an excellent safety profile, was a powerful antioxidant, and had anti-inflammatory, immune-making and antiviral properties, to help in the early stage of SARS-CoV-2 (2)
3. Quercetin is useful as an anti-viral therapy to lessen virus infections. (3)
4. There is a considerable body of evidence supporting the broad antiviral properties of Quercetin. It is especially helpful in respiratory viruses, such as Covid, rhinovirus, and polio virus. (1)
5. In cell cultures, Quercetin was shown to prevent viral entry into the cells. (3)
6. In one study of patients with Covid-19, they supplemented the control group with 500 mg, 3 times a day for 7 days, and then reduced it to 500 mg twice a day for the following 7 days.
After the first week, the Quercetin group had 57% symptom free patients, compared to the placebo group that were only 19% symptom free. (6)
I think it’s safe to say that Quercetin has amazing healing properties!
But as amazing as Quercetin is, it is even greater when it is paired with Vitamin C and Zinc!
Vitamin C
Vitamin C, or ascorbate acid, has been around for a very long time. I think most of us have used it to boost our immune systems when we were getting sick.
When it’s given with Quercetin, it has a synergistic effect that enhances the power of each. The two of them seem to disrupt the virus entry into the cells, which is a key strategy. They also stop the replication of the virus and fortify the immune response. (4)
The Vitamin C also recycles the Quercetin, so that it becomes even more effective the second time around! (4)
The Enemy…NLRP3
There is a group of protein complexes that are encoded in our NLRP3 gene. They are called the NLRP3 inflammazomes.
They find pathogenic micro-organisms and bring inflammation to that area. If you injure yourself, inflammation is a natural defense to heal.
But, if it goes wild, then you have a problem.
According to one of many studies (5), Quercetin and ascorbic acid, can prevent the activation of NLRP3... because of their antioxidant properties.
That is very good news!
Zinc
Studies have confirmed that zinc activates immune system killer cells, blocks entry of pathogens into the cells, and repairs function in Coronavirus-damaged lungs.
The only problem is that zinc has a hard time penetrating the cells to get inside... This is another advantage of using Quercetin and zinc together.
An ionosphore is a compound that combines with specific ions and helps transport across cell membranes.
It has been shown that Quercetin acts as a zinc ionophore, enhancing entrance of zinc into cells. This allows the synergy of the Quercetin, C and Zinc to enter the cell and kill the virus. It is also believed to block viruses from entering cells in the first place. (6)
The Science is in…. Quercetin is NOT a hype...
Quercetin is a winner!
And when you add C and Zinc to Quercetin, YOU are the winner!
