  • A separate 8-week study of 326 children found that those eating papaya-seed-fortified porridge had 64% fewer roundworm infections than those eating standard porridge
  • The mechanism appears to come from two compounds working together: benzyl isothiocyanate (BITC), which disrupts parasite metabolism, and papain, the digestive enzyme papaya is already well known for, which may help break down the parasite's protective outer layer

2. Pumpkin Seeds — Long Tradition, Early Research Support

Pumpkin seeds have been used against tapeworms and other intestinal worms for generations, and modern research is starting to explain why.

Why Isn't There More Research on This?

It's a fair question: if these foods show real promise, why hasn't a company funded a massive clinical trial to prove it definitively?

The honest answer comes down to economics, not effectiveness. A new pharmaceutical compound can be patented, giving a company exclusive rights to sell it for years, which is what justifies spending tens of millions of dollars on large-scale trials.

A papaya seed can't be patented — anyone can grow, sell, or study one, so there's no single company positioned to profit exclusively from proving it works, and therefore little financial incentive to fund the kind of expensive, large-scale research that pharmaceuticals routinely undergo.

This explains the evidence gap — it doesn't prove these foods don't work, but it also means we don't yet have the same weight of evidence a prescription medication would require. It's an honest middle ground worth understanding, rather than either dismissing food-based approaches outright or overselling them as proven cures.
